Summary This written portion of a Plan of Concentration (the Marlboro College equivalent of an undergraduate thesis) is comprised of two parts. The first, entitled "'A Morning Glory at My Window': Williams, Moore, Graham, Snyder, and the Documentary Impulse," examines the poems of four poets as they relate to the documentary impulse first articulated by Whitman in the 1930s. The second section, entitled "'A Soft Breath From a Sunlit Island': A Brief History of John Grierson and the Poetic Documentary," looks at how the terms 'poetic' and 'document' were initially intertwined in Grierson's first definition of the documentary, and explains why Grierson later dropped 'poetic' from the definition of the documentary.
