| Summary | After interning for Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. at Hudson Riverkeeper between my Junior and Senior years at Princeton, I wrote this History of Waterkeeper Alliance, the world's fastest growing environmental organization. Kennedy -- America’s most prominent environmental attorney -- serves as President of Waterkeeper Alliance, a support organization for 157 self-governing Waterkeeper organizations worldwide. The Alliance’s local chapters (such as Alabama’s Black Warrior Riverkeeper, where I am currently Director of Development) use their expertise in science, law, and politics to patrol and speak on behalf of a watershed and its communities. Rather than dictating local policies from its New York headquarters, Waterkeeper Alliance provides scientific, legal, and administrative advice, as well as networking opportunities, for its member organizations. This thesis documents the rise of the Waterkeeper movement from its Hudson origins to its historic victories on waterways across the world (1960s to 2005). It satisfied requirements for my History A.B. as well as my Certificate in Princeton Environmental Institute's Environmental Studies Program. |
