| Summary | Throughout the Cold War, the U.S. and the Soviet Union researched, developed, and deployed numerous weapons systems. Nearly six trillion dollars were spent by the U.S. on nuclear weapons during that time. These destructive weapons were based inside hardened missile silos, undersea aboard submarines, and flown through the air on bombers; however, space was ultimately shielded from weapons systems deployments. This thesis asks the following question: Why haven’t nations put weapons in space? What was the cause of this outcome? The findings of the thesis also show that the cognitive expectations of realist theory are much too high and that this, in most cases, (with the exception of the accidental cooperation on ASATs) changes the probability of cooperation. |
